Imagine. Waking up in the middle of gore and blood. Everything you thought you knew is gone, replaced by horror. Your family has left you, and your friends have been transformed into monsters. This is what happens to Fuminori, the main character in the visual novel, The Song of Saya (or Saya no Uta). His brain is traumatized to the point where everything he sees is from a horror movie.
He considers taking his own life and decides against it for one reason.
SAYA.
SAYA.
Saya is a beautiful girl in this world of horror, the only human among monsters. Our "hero" falls instantly in love with her and forsakes all others, including his former friends. She keeps him isolated and insists she loves him. He needs only her.
If you play a lot of these types of games, you know what is going on here. (Spoiler: she's a monster.) Unfortunately, Fuminori is under her spell. He does not understand what he is doing, and once he realizes, he does not care. This man kills and does untold things to people who were (and still are) his friends. And he does not give a crap because it is all for Saya.
I have never killed my bestie because a pretty girl insisted. However, this is one of the most relatable posts I have ever written. My life feels upside down some days. Like everything I try to do becomes stinky and horrid. Like everyone I love has turned against me.
On those days, it is easy to turn to things which look beautiful and make me feel better: alcohol, drugs, abuse, eating when I shouldn't, shopping when I don't have money, screaming at my husband when he's done nothing wrong. Sin makes us feel good for a short time, but the long term effects are devastating.
Romans 6:26 lays out just how bad sin is. "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord." ALL sin, not just the "really bad ones" people talk about all the time. All sin leads to death, hell, and other consequences you do not want. But it looks so enticing. It looks so beautiful. Like it is all you will ever need. Just like Saya.
God knew we would have this temptation, so His Word warns us against sin at every opportunity. "Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away. These desires give birth to sinful actions. And when sin is allowed to grow, it gives birth to death" (James 1:14-15). James not only gives us these warnings; he lets us know he understands. Those desires do look beautiful. They are hard to resist. However, he does not stop there.
"So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls. But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says..." (James 1:21-22). Sin may look beautiful and it will try to seduce you, but if you stand on the Word of God, you have the power to overcome. "But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don't forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it" (James 1:26).
